Here’s a video from a former dancer at my school. This was her final dance show performance and got in as a student choreographer with her solo. She is extremely talented; at the first dress rehearsal when the cast watched her piece for the first time, she got a standing ovation, and tears in the casts’ eyes, as well as her own.
When asked about the solo, she simply said it was about pain.

Okay, I’m going to rant about something that’s been on my mind for quite awhile now. I’m so sick and tired of reading post after post on my dash about how dancers wish they had another ballerina’s feet, legs, extensions, flexibility, the ability to do turns or jumps higher, etc. I have literally never seen a post with someone saying that they wish they had another ballerina’s artistry, musicality, emotional depth, or the power to engage an audience so much so that they weep or cheer in appreciation. I believe the latter set of qualities far outweighs the former in what makes you an incredible dancer. I think that if a dancer works hard and smart then they can be very talented in that aspect but artistry is not as easily attainable as technique, you either have it in you or you don’t. Ballet is not about circus tricks, it’s about telling a story and conveying the emotions of your character as well as connecting with the audience and I hope others will realize this as well.
